What's in store:

  • The pressure of performing - Is that our own fault?
  • I thought I knew how to strike the balance in my life - I was wrong.
  • If I intend to speak, I must lead by example.
  • Quote: We ought to be tolerant with others...

My first substantial presentation awaited me in my new job, with the deadline set for early Monday morning. The weight of perfectionism bore down upon me. It consumed my entire weekend, robbing me of time with the family, great sport on Tv and just needed relaxation after a busy week. It made me ponder: does the corporate world inherently demand this level of sacrifice? Though it doesn't outright ask for it, it somehow compels it, relentlessly and exhaustively. This demand reveals our susceptibility to peer pressure, our moments of weakness, and our struggles with the discipline to assert ourselves on things that truly matter.

In this relentless tug-of-war, how can we strike the elusive balance in our lives? How can we ensure our priorities remain steadfast and unwavering, holding onto what truly matters? I used to preach about work-life balance, but only now that I am in the corporate fold do I truly comprehend the struggle. I understand those who claim they don't have time to train or complain that work and kids has sidelined their personal well-being for years.

It's a formidable challenge, resisting the all-encompassing pull of work. But where does one's family fit in? Where do you fit in? Where's the time for training, relaxation, or even reading for that matter? I don't possess all the answers; I'm still navigating this intricate maze myself. It's a relentless battle, juggling work commitments, family responsibilities, fatherly duties, and, of course, the personal promises I've made to myself.

What I do know is that I need more self-control and discipline than I've ever needed before. Without these, I'll find myself echoing the very excuses I've heard time and again. If I intend to speak, I must lead by example. It's far from easy, and I falter often – just ask my patient wife. However, I refuse to stay down; I rise and strive anew, and I encourage you to do the same.

Remember, "You've got this." It's never going to look perfect. All that is required of you is that you do not give up! You get back up when you fall, and you go again.

I love the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius, the greatest Roman emperor to walk this earth. His words resonate deeply:

"We ought to be tolerant with others and strict with ourselves."

In your day be courageous, confident, and curious.
